Bás tragóideach sa phobal scoil | Tragic passing in our school community

August 29, 2025

A chairde,

We have learned of the death of John Jerard Mac Siúlaí. John Jerard was a student in Coláiste de hÍde and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our school community is deeply saddened by his death and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

I anticipate that the next few days will be difficult for everyone. Routine is very important at a time of tragedy. It provides a sense of security, especially for younger students. It is important to maintain the normal routine as much as possible. However, for many of the students this will be difficult. Our Student Support Team have spoken to all year groups this morning and will be available to help our school community cope with this tragedy and to offer them advice and guidance. We have also requested the support of the Psychological Support Services to ensure that we provide the best level of support to our community at this difficult time.

It is possible that your child may have some feelings and questions they may like to discuss with you. It is important to give factual information that is age appropriate. You can help your child by taking time to listen and by encouraging them to express their feelings. All children are different and will express their feelings in different ways. Over the course of the coming days, please keep an eye on your child and allow them to express their feelings without criticism. Young people frequently turn to social media to see what others are saying, we urge you to emphasise and reinforce the need to be extremely sensitive and careful about what they post as John Jerard’s passing will affect members of our school community in different ways.

If you would like any support or advice, please contact the school.

Our thoughts are with Kelly, Trevor, Jamie and the rest of their family at this difficult time.

Tabhair aire dá chéile,

Sarah Ní Mhuirí
